Basket Weaving

Basket Weaving- Perihan

Perihan’s story is one that can inspire many women. Having lived in various cities until her 40s due to her husband’s work, she gained a wealth of experiences throughout her life. After her husband retired, Perihan decided it was time to focus on herself, opening a new chapter in her life. Her active and social nature made her someone who could easily connect with people wherever she went.

She began attending courses offered by the local council. As her skills developed through the training she received, she progressed from being a student to becoming an instructor.

Today, Perihan teaches basket weaving in several council-run courses, sharing her craft with many women over the years. Her classes go beyond just learning a craft; they offer a supportive environment where women forge new friendships and even empower themselves economically by selling their products.

The products created in Perihan’s classes are exhibited and sold at venues provided by the local council. These exhibitions not only raise the value of handmade crafts but also enable women to earn income from their work. Through projects like Retro.ist, the creations of Perihan and other women reach a broader audience, enhancing appreciation for their craftsmanship.

For Perihan, basket weaving has become more than just a hobby. It’s been a journey where she regained her self-confidence, continued her productivity, and inspired others. In this time dedicated to herself, she realised the significant impact she has made both for herself and for those around her, and she continues on this journey.
